When Hearts Grow Cold

Pastor’s Thoughts

When Hearts Grow Cold

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about how easy it is for hearts to grow cold.

Not overnight. Not all at once.

Most people don’t wake up one morning and decide they don’t love God anymore. Usually it happens slowly. Quietly. A little at a time.

A little less burdened.A little less compassionate.A little less sensitive to conviction.

And honestly… that’s what makes it dangerous.

Jesus warned about this in Matthew 24:12 when He said, “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”

I think every believer has to guard against that.

Cold Toward Each Other

At Salt & Light, we often say “people over process.”

And don’t misunderstand me… processes matter. Stewardship matters. Structure matters. Truth matters. But behind every policy and procedure is a real person carrying real burdens.

People are not interruptions to ministry. They are the ministry.

One of the dangers churches face is becoming efficient while forgetting compassion. It is possible to defend truth while forgetting tenderness. It is possible to become doctrinally right while emotionally unreachable.

Jesus never treated hurting people like inconveniences. May God help us never become so focused on systems that we forget how to love people well.

Cold Toward God’s Word

Spiritual coldness also reveals itself in the way we approach Scripture.

Not necessarily by rejecting the Bible… but by no longer trembling at it.

Bible reading becomes routine. Sermons become familiar. Conviction becomes rare. We hear truth without really letting it search us anymore.

Isaiah 66:2 says God looks to the one “who trembles at My word.”

The danger is not merely a closed Bible… but an unmoved heart.

Cold Toward the Spirit

We can also grow cold toward the Spirit of God.

Not in the sense that God abandons His people… but in the sense that we stop responding to His leading the way we once did.

Promptings become easier to ignore.Conviction becomes easier to explain away.Obedience becomes easier to delay.

And somewhere along the way, prayer becomes less urgent, worship becomes less meaningful, and our hearts stop responding with tenderness.

Cold Toward the Lost

One of the clearest signs of spiritual coldness is losing our burden for lost people.

When hearts are warm toward God, they are burdened for souls. We pray for prodigals. We think about eternity. We carry concern for people who do not know Christ.

But when hearts grow cold, evangelism slowly becomes optional instead of urgent.

We stop seeing eternal souls and begin seeing interruptions to our schedules.

And somewhere along the way… we stop weeping for people.

Cold Toward Sin

And maybe the most dangerous coldness of all… is coldness toward sin.

Things that once grieved us no longer bother us the same way. Convictions fade. Compromise becomes easier. The line between holiness and worldliness gets blurrier and blurrier.

The heart rarely becomes frozen overnight. It cools degree by degree.

But there is hope.

God still softens hearts. Revival has always begun when people became honest about where they had drifted and returned humbly to the Lord.

So my prayer this week is simple:

Lord, keep us tender.

Tender toward people.Tender toward Your Word.Tender toward Your Spirit.Tender toward the lost.Tender toward sin.

15 Year Church Anniversary BBQ & Outdoor Service

June 7th marks 15 years of Salt & Light Church… and we want to celebrate together as a church family.

That Sunday, we’ll be having one combined outdoor worship service starting at 10 AM on the big lawn. We’ll have worship, testimonies, preaching, and outdoor baptisms as we thank God for all He has done over the last 15 years.

After service, we’ll stick around for a church BBQ with hamburgers, hotdogs, inflatables for the kids, and games out on the lawn.

Honestly… this is something I’ve wanted to do ever since we moved onto this property, and it feels like the perfect year to finally do it.

Since we’ll all be together outside that morning, there will be no Sunday school or nursery.

We also want to hear your testimonies. If Salt & Light has impacted your life in some way, please submit your testimony to Pastor Justin by June 1st.

We would love for you to invite somebody and join us as we thank the Lord for His faithfulness through these last 15 years.

Salt and Light Thrift—A Good Gift from the Father of Lights

We are still looking for volunteers, especially in donations and sorting, and we would love to have more people join the team.

Interested in serving or volunteering? Sign up today! For hiring questions, contact Troy Barnes at 502-472-8577.

Serving Opportunities & Needs

Building Fund - The building purchase and maintenance needs continue in 2026. Thank you for prayerfully considering giving an offering toward the property purchase. Please memo your offerings “Building Fund”.

In 2021, when Salt & Light outgrew our former location, God provided the beautiful 71 acre property with a former horse auction facility and barn where we now gather as a church family.

We entered a lease to own agreement with a payment due December 31 of each year until the purchase is complete.

Recurring Monthly Giving - As the Lord continues to grow His work among us, one way many choose to serve is through recurring monthly giving. This helps provide steady support for the ministry and allows us to plan wisely while trusting God completely.

If you’re interested, you can explore this option through our online giving page by visiting the website. Thank you for your faithfulness.  "God truly does fund what He calls."

Food Pantry

Have you ever wanted to get involved with the food pantry but weren’t sure where to start? We would love to have you join us! One way to serve is by helping during our appointments with families in the community who visit. It’s a meaningful way to connect and be part of what God is doing through this ministry.

Bible Donations - The Food Pantry gives a Bible to many of our visitors. Children’s Bibles are especially popular. We are not requesting purchasing Bibles. If you have gently used Bibles that you no longer use or that your children have aged out of, it would be a blessing if you could donate them for us to share.

Meal Kits - purchase and assemble quick and easy dinner kits that include the recipe and all of the ingredients to prepare the meal. The kits don’t need to be fancy - quick, easy, and cost-effective are perfect and a big help for busy families.

Create kit(s) from your favorite simple recipes or check the Salt & Light Family Facebook group for posts with recipes.
